By the Farida Floral design team. Farida Floral is a mother-daughter luxury florist in Fairfax, VA, hand-arranging flowers for Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland since 2017.
The average American floral purchase now runs over $100 per transaction, and when customers ask us why one rose arrangement costs $125 and another $345, the honest answer usually comes down to one word: variety. "Roses" covers hundreds of cultivars, but as a buyer you are mostly choosing between three types: standard roses, garden roses, and spray roses. They differ in bloom size, petal count, fragrance, vase life and price. Here is the breakdown we give customers in our Fairfax studio, with nothing glossed over.
The three types compared
| Standard rose | Garden rose | Spray rose | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blooms per stem | 1 | 1 | 3-7 smaller blooms |
| Bloom size | 2.5-3.5" | 3-5" fully open | 1-2" |
| Petal count | 25-40 | 60-120+ | 15-25 per bloom |
| Fragrance | Light or none | Often strong, true rose scent | Light |
| Vase life | 7-10 days | 5-7 days | 7-10 days |
| Shape | Classic spiral bud | Ruffled, peony-like cup | Clustered, airy |
| Relative price | $ | $$$ | $$ |
Standard roses: the classic
The rose most people picture: one high-centered bloom on a long straight stem. The best are grown at high altitude near the equator, primarily in Ecuador and Colombia, where intense light and cool nights produce oversized heads and thick stems. When a shipment arrives at our studio, standard roses go straight into conditioning: a fresh angled cut, thorns stripped, then a minimum of 12 hours hydrating in the cooler before we will arrange them. That conditioning window is a real difference between florist roses and grocery-store roses, and it is why properly handled standards reach 7-10 days in the vase. Our Signature Rose Box Red uses premium long-stem standards arranged for a full, uniform finish.

Garden roses: the luxury tier
Bred for fragrance and form rather than shipping durability. They open wide into layered, ruffled cups with double or triple the petals of a standard rose, and most carry genuine rose fragrance, something modern standard roses largely traded away for vase life. They cost more because they are more delicate at every step: slower to grow, harder to ship, shorter selling window. They are also the reason luxury arrangements look expensive in photographs; petal density reads instantly. You will find them throughout our Secret Garden Collection and garden mixes like Blush & Bleu.
Spray roses: texture and charm
Multiple small blooms per stem, which gives arrangements movement and fullness without bulk. In the studio we use them two ways: as the soft transition between larger focal flowers, and on their own for gifts that should read charming rather than formal, like new baby flowers and just-because deliveries. Their vase life matches standards at 7-10 days, which makes them one of the best value-per-day flowers we sell.
How to choose (our honest advice)
- Maximum impact, classic look: standard roses, more stems.
- Fragrance and romance: garden roses; fewer stems still land harder.
- Soft, textured, natural: spray roses or a garden mix.
- Longest vase life: standard or spray. Recut stems and change water every 2 days; with roses, water hygiene beats flower food.
- On a budget: a dozen excellent standards beats two dozen mediocre ones. Every time.

FAQ
Why do garden roses cost more than regular roses?
Higher petal counts mean slower growing, more delicate handling, and shorter shipping tolerance. You are paying for bloom density and fragrance, not markup.
Which roses last the longest in a vase?
Standard and spray roses, at 7-10 days with basic care. Garden roses trade a few days of vase life for fragrance and fuller form.
