What to Write on Sympathy Flowers: 40 Card Messages

By the Farida Floral design team. Farida Floral is a mother-daughter luxury florist in Fairfax, VA, hand-arranging flowers for Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland since 2017.

The flowers are chosen. Then the cursor blinks in the card message box, and nothing feels right. We watch customers stall at this step every week, so we collected the messages that actually get sent: 40 of them, from a single line to something personal, organized by situation. Borrow freely; the family will never know, and it would not matter if they did.

The one rule

Short and sincere beats long and eloquent. A sympathy card is read in a moment of exhaustion; three honest sentences land harder than a paragraph of poetry. Say you are sorry, say what the person meant, offer something concrete. Any one of the three is enough.

Simple and universal

  • With deepest sympathy from all of us.
  • Thinking of you and your family today and always.
  • We are so sorry for your loss.
  • Holding you close in our hearts.
  • With love and sympathy, now and in the days ahead.
  • May these flowers say what words cannot.
  • Our hearts are with you.
  • Sending strength and comfort.
  • You are in our thoughts every day.
  • With heartfelt condolences.

For the loss of a parent

  • Your mother's kindness lives on in you. We are so sorry.
  • Your father was one of the finest people we knew. Thinking of you.
  • She raised someone wonderful. That says everything about her.
  • May the love your dad gave so freely surround you now.
  • No one loved like your mom. We will miss her deeply.

For the loss of a spouse or partner

  • What you two had was rare. We grieve with you.
  • He loved you so much. We are here, whenever and however you need.
  • Wishing you moments of peace among so many memories.
  • Her light touched everyone, and most of all you.
  • There are no words. Only love, and all of ours is with you.

For a colleague or acquaintance

  • Our whole team is thinking of you and your family.
  • With sincere condolences from everyone at [company].
  • We are saddened by your loss. Please take all the time you need.
  • Your work family is holding you close.
  • Deepest sympathy from your friends at [company].

Faith and comfort

  • May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
  • Praying for peace and comfort for your family.
  • May her memory be a blessing.
  • He is at peace now. May that bring you some as well.
  • Lifting your family up in prayer this week.

Offering something concrete

  • Dinner is coming from us this week. No need to answer the door.
  • I will call on Sunday. No pressure to pick up.
  • We are taking the kids to practice this month. It is handled.
  • When you are ready for company, I will bring the coffee.
  • Anything you need, the answer is already yes.

When some time has passed

  • Still thinking of you, one month on.
  • Grief does not keep a calendar. Neither does our support.
  • Remembering [name] with you today.
  • These made us think of her. We hope they brighten the room.
  • The first holidays are the hardest. We are with you.

What to avoid

  • "I know how you feel." Even if you do, the moment is theirs.
  • "Everything happens for a reason." Comfort for the writer, not the reader.
  • "At least..." Any sentence starting this way minimizes the loss.
  • Asking questions. "Let me know what you need" puts work on the griever; "Dinner arrives Tuesday" does not.

How to sign it

Always include your full name, and your family or company name where relevant. After a loss, cards arrive by the dozen; "Love, Mike" from one of four Mikes creates a small, awkward mystery the family has to solve. Sign so no one has to wonder.

FAQ

What do you write on flowers for a funeral service vs the family's home?

Flowers sent to a service are seen by everyone, so keep the message formal: "With deepest sympathy, the Miller family." Flowers sent to the home can carry the personal version. Many customers send both; our condolence collection covers either setting.

Should the message mention the person who died by name?

If you knew them, yes; hearing the name used warmly is one of the most comforting things a grieving family reports. If you only know the survivor, focus the message on them instead.

Can you write the card for me?

We hand-write every card message exactly as you type it at checkout, and if you call us at 703-223-3931 unsure of wording, we will help you choose. It happens daily; there is no need to be embarrassed.

How soon should sympathy flowers arrive?

Within the first week is customary, but late is genuinely better than never; a "thinking of you still" arrangement weeks later often lands when the casseroles have stopped. We deliver same-day across Fairfax, Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland; see our get well guide for hospital situations.
