When Is Peony Season? A Florist's Complete Guide

Every May, the same thing happens in our Fairfax studio: the peony question. When are they coming? Can I get them for Mother's Day? Why were they gone by July? Peonies inspire more devotion than any flower we sell, and they earn it, but they run on nature's schedule, not ours. Here is the complete guide to peony season, including exactly when to order and how to make each stem last.

When is peony season?

The domestic peony window falls between late April and mid-June in most of the US, with each individual variety blooming for a short stretch inside that window. In a garden, a single peony plant holds its show for roughly 7-10 days per stem. For the DC and Northern Virginia area, peak availability lands in May, which is why peonies and Mother's Day are so intertwined here.

Why peonies are worth the wait (and the price)

A peony opens from a tight golf-ball bud into a bloom the size of your palm, often 5 inches across, with a petal count no rose can match. That transformation is the show. Unlike most flowers, which look their best on day one, a peony gets more spectacular for the first three days you own it. When customers tell us an arrangement "grew overnight," it is always the peonies.

They are also genuinely scarce. A peony field produces one short flush per year, and a new planting takes about three years to reach full production. That single-harvest economics is why peony prices climb every Mother's Day and why we recommend ordering at least 2-3 days ahead during May.

The marshmallow test: how florists judge peony buds

Peonies ship and sell as buds, and the stage matters. Cut too green and hard, and the bud may never open. The industry standard is the "marshmallow test": a bud that is showing color and gives softly under your thumb, like a marshmallow, will open reliably and give you the full 5-10 day run. Every peony stem that leaves our studio has passed that check; the too-tight ones stay in the cooler another day.

Making cut peonies last

Cut peonies typically hold 5-7 days in the vase, and up to 10 with careful handling. Our studio routine, which you can repeat at home:

• Recut the stems at a sharp angle the moment they arrive, and every other day after.
• Strip any leaf below the waterline. Michigan State University Extension notes that removing leaves cuts water loss dramatically; leaves in water also breed the bacteria that end vase life early.
• Cool room, no fruit bowl. Heat and the ethylene gas from ripening fruit both accelerate opening.
• Want to slow the show? Move the vase somewhere cool overnight. Florists hold peony buds for weeks in cold storage; your refrigerator works for a night.

Can't get peonies? What we recommend instead

From July to March, when true peonies are scarce or unavailable, two flowers deliver the same lush, ruffled effect: garden roses (60-120+ petals, often fragrant) and double ranunculus. Can I get peonies for Mother's Day?

Usually yes, in our area, since May is peak season, but demand is intense. Order 2-3 days early rather than same-day, and we will do the rest.

Why did my peonies never open?

They were cut too tight. A bud with no color showing and rock-hard to the touch may stall permanently. This is the most common peony complaint with mail-order flowers, and it is exactly what the marshmallow test prevents.

Are peonies available year-round anywhere?

Nearly. Between US spring crops, Alaska's summer harvest, and Southern Hemisphere winters, a determined florist can source peonies most of the year, at a price. Ask us and we will tell you honestly whether that week's stems are worth it.
